Joint Transportation Committee Meeting Summary (May 23-24, 2002)

The Joint Transportation and Highways Interim Committee met on May 23 and 24, 2002 in Cheyenne.  The Committee received testimony regarding school bus seatbelts, commercial driver’s license requirements for Department of Transportation employees, effects of NAFTA on transportation issues, national identification cards, temporary employees’ vehicle registration, transportation of hazardous materials, and graduated driver’s licenses for teenagers. 

 

The Committee received information regarding road design and construction processes and information regarding how the Department of Transportation determines what roads need to be repaired.  The Committee received testimony regarding rules the Department of Transportation has promulgated regarding railroad fencing.  The Department of Transportation requested that the Committee sponsor several pieces of legislation in order to fund multi-lane highways around the state.  The Committee also met with the Counter Terrorism Commission to discuss activities related to combating terrorism.        

 

The Committee requested draft legislation related to graduated driver’s licenses and legislation related to multi-lane state highways for consideration at a future meeting.  The Committee has not yet set a date for the next meeting, pending a Management Council decision regarding the Committee’s request for monies for extra meetings of the Committee to coordinate homeland security issues.
