Subject:  Authorizes board of pharmacy to license telepharmacies.

 

Summary/Major Elements:

 

This act:

 

·        Defines "telepharmacy" to mean a site that is:

 

o       Located within a medical clinic or community health center and at least 25 miles from a licensed pharmacy;

 

o       Staffed during hours of operation by a certified pharmacy technician or registered pharmacy intern;

 

o       Under the active control and supervision of a licensed pharmacist.

 

·        Authorizes the board to adopt rules permitting a licensed pharmacy to operate one telepharmacy, provided that the telepharmacy:

 

o       Stores and dispenses prescription drugs in unit of issue packages;

 

o       Is connected by secure audio/video connection to the parent pharmacy where a registered pharmacist is available during hours of operation;

 

o       Has security provisions to verify customer identity and prescription information, and automated inventory controls;

 

o       Prominently displays the name, address and toll free telephone number of the parent pharmacy.
