Subject:  Amends podiatry licensing and education requirements.

 

Summary/Major Elements:

 

This act:

 

·        Amends the definition of "podiatry" to include:

 

o       Surgical treatment of the ankle and tendons that insert into the foot, provided the podiatrist has completed a podiatric surgical residency training program approved by the licensing board;

 

o       Amputation of the toes or other parts of the foot under local anesthesia.

 

·        Requires that applicants for a podiatry license who graduate from podiatric college after July 1, 2005, must successfully complete a board-approved residency;

 

·        Substitutes the American Podiatric Medical Association, or its successor, for the American Podiatry Association as the recognized accrediting agency for podiatry schools;

 

·        Requires continuing education for podiatry license renewal, in accord with board rules;

 

·        Changes the mandatory period for inspection of podiatrists' X-ray machines from "annually" to "periodically" as determined by the board.
