Subject: Amends compensation for retired judges who are assigned to hear cases as specified.
Summary/Major Elements:
· Under current law, a retired judge who hears a case during the period of his retirement is paid the difference between his retirement benefit and the current compensation of an active judge on the court to which he is assigned to hear a case.
· This act:
· Provides that retired supreme court justices or district court judges who are assigned to hear cases on any court during the period of the judge's retirement shall be paid an amount equal to the current compensation of an active judge on the court to which he is assigned to hear a case, without a reduction for the retirement benefit he is receiving as a retired judge;
· Specifies that the compensation paid under this act shall be made in a manner that does not jeopardize the qualified status of state retirement plans that are authorized by the legislature;
· Provides an appropriation to the Supreme Court to fund the increase in compensation paid to retired judges who are assigned to hear cases during their retirement.
