Summary/Major Elements:

· The act defines public employees for purposes of governmental  claims and immunity statutes to include physician assistants, nurses, optometrists and dentists providing contract services for state institutions or county jails.  The act also defines public employee to include physicians providing contract services to county jails.

· The act defines public employees for purposes of the local government self-insurance pool to include physician assistants, nurses, optometrists and dentists providing contract services for state institutions or county jails.  The act also defines public employee to include physicians providing contract services to county jails.

· The act defines public employees for purposes of the state government self-insurance pool to include physician assistants, nurses, optometrists and dentists providing contract services for state institutions. 

· The act extends the one million dollar limitation on claims against health care professionals under the governmental tort claims act to claims under the local government self-insurance pool.

· The act repeals the now defunct old local government self-insurance pool.
